Overview & Instructions

Desktop Buddy Companion!

Desktop Companion Buddy is a small interactive bat that lives directly on your Windows desktop. He walks, runs, flies, sits, reacts to you, follows your cursor, plays games, gets hungry, eats, sleeps, and uses his own little home.

He is designed to feel more like a tiny creature than a normal application. His behavior is not one fixed repeating loop. He can randomly decide to wander, sit for different lengths of time, fly around, react, rest, play, or interact with you depending on what he is doing.

You can pet him, pick him up, drag him around, watch him fall and land, play with his ball, let him chase your mouse, feed him when he gets hungry, and wake him when he goes to sleep. He also has floating dialogue bubbles, reactions, reminders, timers, and other small interactions built directly into the companion.

He can move across multiple monitors and has different movement states including walking, running, hovering, flying, dashing, landing, and perching.

His hunger system progresses very slowly over time. When he becomes hungry, he starts asking for food. Feeding is interactive: you select the feeding option, a small piece of food appears at your cursor, and you move it to his mouth so he can grab and eat it. If he becomes completely exhausted, he can go to his home and sleep until you wake him.

Desktop Companion Buddy runs locally on your computer. It does not require an account, cloud service, external server, or internet connection for its companion features. Its movement, animations, games, dialogue, hunger, feeding, sleeping, reminders, timers, and saved companion state are handled locally by the application.

The idea is simple: it is a weird little bat that lives on your desktop.

Antivirus / Security Information

Desktop Companion Buddy has been publicly scanned through VirusTotal for transparency.

The current release's main executable, DesktopCompanion.exe, reports 0 detections from 70 antivirus engines.

The accompanying .NET application DLL currently receives 2 generic heuristic detections out of 70 engines, from Malwarebytes (MachineLearning/Anomalous.97%) and MaxSecure (Trojan.Malware.300983.susgen). The remaining scanners report it as undetected, including Microsoft, Kaspersky, Bitdefender, ESET, Avast, AVG, McAfee, Sophos, CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, Symantec, and Trend Micro.

Desktop Companion Buddy is an unusual Windows desktop application. It uses transparent overlay windows, cursor and input interaction, topmost windows, desktop/monitor information, and other system-level functionality required for an interactive desktop pet. Automated heuristic scanners can classify unusual application behavior as suspicious even when it is being used for legitimate functionality.

VirusTotal's sandbox also attempted to execute the application's .NET DLL independently through rundll32.exe, which is not how Desktop Companion Buddy is normally launched.

VirusTotal reported no network communications, no IDS rule detections, and no Sigma rule detections during the displayed analysis.

The full VirusTotal report is provided so users can inspect the results themselves.
